    Sàlààm alykom !

We can use "used to" to talk about a past habit or state

An example for a state: "He used to live in London" (but he doesn't now)
An example for a habit: "He used to go on holiday to Scotland every year" (but he doesn't now)
"Used to" is the same for all subjects, and you follow it with the infinitive without "to":
    I used to smoke.
    You used to smoke.
    He used to smoke.
    She used to smoke.
    We used to smoke.
    They used to smoke.

To make the negative, use "didn't" + use + to + verb. (Remove the final /d/ ending from "used".)
    I didn't use to smoke.
    He didn't use to smoke.

To make the question, use "did" as the auxiliary, and take the final /d/ ending off "used":
    Did you use to smoke?

    Did she use to smoke?

To talk about past habits in English, you can also use would + infinitive without "to":
We would go to Scotland every year when I was a child.
We would travel there by car overnight.

However, you cannot use "would" in this way to talk about past states. For this, you must use "used to".

افتراضي رد: The grammar rules of "used to"

i have a question my sister
from ur topic i anderstand that we can replace "used" with "plan"
    for exemple
i can say: i'm planing to visit london
and i can say: i used to visit london
the diffrence between the first statment and the second is the time
the first used for the present or present continious
and the second used for the past who did not come true
i hope u correct my comment if there is a mistake
    thx

Thx to you too my sister , you're welcome any time ! thx

and so happy to see you're question my brother ! May Allah rewards you ,

first : i hope you will have a look there
Present Continuous >> than we use *used to *to express about a past habit ,used to + verb refers to past situation and no longer exist now let's have an example : you speak now and you say **when i was child i used to watch cartoons and now no so , that's the meaning of past situation and no longer exist but if want to refer to a habit in the present you must use the present simple .

i can say: i'm planing to visit london

and i can say: i used to visit london

so your sentences are correct about grammar :but the meaning of the first is you will visit London maybe tomorrow , next weekend , ...in the future because this is a plan and we use present Continuous and for planing really i don't no if you just forget the other n or ... anyway
, for the second it has the meaning of a past habit ---> you was visit London and now no you don't visit London . and there's Difference between them !

the second used for the past who did not come true
for this no . it come true and now no ,

    goood luck !!!

Thanks a lot my sister Let's change i really got benefit from your explanation
you woke my curiousity up about this topic, so i had a look on the net to get more details. i want to share with you what i have found

    The answer of Alex Gooch*

We use both used to and would to talk about things in the past which we don't do now or are not happening now. Sometimes both 'used to' and 'would' are OK in one sentence - sometimes only 'used to'

The difference between 'would' and 'used to'
We only use 'would' to describe actions or situations that were repeated again and again and again...
But we use 'used to' for any extended action or situation in the past

'Would' is only good for actions or situations that were repeated many times
'Used to' is good for any action or situation that continued for a period of time in the past, including repeated actions or situations

To make this clearer, let's look at the three examples of 'used to' sentences, and see if we can change them into 'would' sentences
    Here's the first example
"I used to live in Manchester, but I moved to London last year"

Can we use 'would' instead of 'used to' here
No, we can't, because 'living in Manchester' wasn't repeated again and again and again. It's simply a situation in the past. Therefore, only 'used to' is good in this sentence.

    The second example
" When he was at school, he used to play football every Saturday"

Here, we're talking about 'playing football every Saturday'. This is an action that was repeated many times, so we can also say:
"When he was at school, he would play football every Saturday".
'Used to' and 'would' are both good here, and the meaning is the same.

    Finally, the third example
"She used to hate her job until she got a promotion"

Did she 'hate her job' many times
No, this isn't a repeated action, so in this example 'would' isn't possible.
We have to use 'used to'
