SheikBraham High School First Term English Examination
Form: Exp Sciences Classes. Year one Date: 22 December 2010
Here is an email sent by Eliza, a South-African girl to an Algerian key- pal. Read it carefully then do the tasks that follow:
    Dear Yasmine
I have found your email address on the internet this morning, and I am so pleased to correspond with an Algerian key- pal. Your country is getting more and more popular these days among the South- Africans, and we are proud of the qualification of your national squad for 2010 World Cup. I am eager to know more about you and your country. But I have to introduce myself first.
My name is Eliza. I am named after my grandmother who passed away seven years ago. Her death caused a terrible shock to me. I am 15 going on 16. I am a first- year student of Experimental Sciences at Nelson Mandela High School. I am quite tall and plump. I look a bit like my father. I have got his fair hair and dark brown eyes, but I have got my mother’s personality. I live in a so small, healthier, and mutually supportive family.
On weekdays, I always wake up early in the morning to do ablution and prepare myself for the Dawn prayer. I often take my breakfast at seven. After finishing the breakfast, I dress and go to school. I generally take the bus because it is a little bit far. I have classes from 8 to 11 in the morning and from 2 to 4 in the afternoon. I would like to be important in the near future. I want to get a job consistent with my speciality. I have a dream. I want to be a video-photographer for weddings and social ceremonies.
I live, together with my family, in Johannesburg, the richest city in South Africa. It is undergoing renovation since the early 2000‘s, motivated in its approach by the next World Cup Football championship. Johannesburg has about 710 000 inhabitants, a density of 1 962 inhabitants / km ². The city is known for hosting the Earth Summit2002 and the final FIFA World Cup to be held on Sunday, July 11. I hear a great number of Algerians will arrive in Johannesburg to support their national team. It would be a great surprise to see you among them. Never mind, the weather will be beautiful. Welcome! Eliza

Most of us suffer from stress. And this endangers our health. Doctors say that stress i.e pressure we live with every day, makes us ill. It gives us headaches and stomachaches. Doctors have found that two modern killers-heart disease and cancer are due to stress. They are more common in people who find it difficult to relax in those who take it easy.

But perhaps the most important thing we can do is to learn how to relax. “Every time we sit down and we put our feet up, every time we relax, we take away some of the tension that causes stress ,”doctors claim.

It’s really easy for doctors to tell people how to relax. But how do people really dothat.I decided to find out for myself. So I questioned sixty teenagers between 15 and 17 how they relaxed…..

Read the text carefully then do the activities:

Carol Kendall, from the Daily News, has written this report after having questioned 100 teenagers about their leisure activities to know what young people in Britain do in their leisure time.
In Britain , young people have a lot of hobbies they practise in their free time. These activities are sporting and non-sporting activities.
Among the non-sporting activities, all adolescents said that they loved watching T.V. When I asked them which programmes they preferred best, most of them replied they enjoyed listening to music.
When asked if they used the internet, many of them answered that they spent a lot of time chatting with friends, playing video games and watching videos. Some of them said they liked going to concert or the theatre, and others told me they enjoyed eating in a fast-food restaurant. I, then ,wanted to know if they liked reading and only a few of them replied they did.
As to the sporting activities, boys are more sporty than girls. O f course, football is the most popular sport among boys. Both boys and girls said they did a lot of cycling. Forty two boys and thirty six girls said they liked going to the swimming pool. When I asked them what other sports they practised, they replied tennis and basket-ball. Only 6o/o of the boys added that they practised boxing. None of the girls is interested in that sport which they find too violent.

Mohamed Abu Rahma, from Ismailaia, Egypt, tells this story about an event that happened when he was studying for his P.H.D.in London. He had brought his family to live with him in England, and often he would take them to the park to enjoy the flowers, fresh air, and some Egyptian food. One sunny day as they were eating in the park, a dog smelled the food and came up to the family. “Imshi! Imshi!” said Mohamed. (Imshi means “go away” in Arabic.) But the dog came closer to him to beg. “Imshi! Imshi!” said Mohammed again, but the dog would not go away. Then Mohammed’s seven-year-old son spoke up, “Papi, That dog won’t go away if you say ‘imshi’. It’s an English dog.” The boy turned to the dog and said, “go away! Go away!” The dog then turned around and ran away. “Perhaps my son knows English better than his father,” thought Mohammed. When Mohammed returned to Egypt, he told the amusing story to his father. “Amazing!” said the grandfather. “Even their dogs speak English!”.

    TEXT
THE OAK TREE AND THE REEDS
Once upon a time there was a giant oak tree which grew beside a river. One day a rainstorm broke out and uprooted it. While it was floating down a river, it noticed some reeds which were growing near the bank, and cried out to them, “My Goodness! How did it come that such small plants as you have managed withstand the rainstorm, while I haven't?"
"It was easy enough", answered the reeds. "Why did you stand stubbornly stiffly against storms as you did? Look at us, we bowed down to wind and storms when they broke out in order to let them pass. So we saved ourselves from their violence." "You had only yourself to blame," the reeds added.
